Ian McIntosh

                                                                        Durban based

Ian McIntosh was a National selector of the Rugby World Cup winning Springbok team in 2007 and serves on the International Rugby Board Experimental Laws Committee. He served as head coach for the National side during the early 90s. He is a hugely experienced coach and highly regarded in South African rugby circles. He took The Natal Sharks to 5 Currie Cup finals of which he won 4 Currie Cup titles, plus a Super 12 Final during the 1990's.

He grew up Kwe Kwe and Bulawayo in Zimbabwe. McIntosh was injured early in his career and his passion for rugby turned to coaching.  His first taste of his trade in the 1970s under the tutelage of the then Welsh Rugby Union.

He coached the former Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) side for 7 years during the seventies. He has also coached the SA National sevens side but his biggest achievement to date was taking charge of the South African national side. He led the side until the year before the 1995 World Cup, where Kitch Christie praised him for setting the platform for the 95 victory.  His tenure at Natal Sharks saw a successful decade of rugby where the players following his patterns played a brand of rugby which became world renowned. His players during that era have become household names in both Natal Province and throughout the Country and most of them are still very much involved in the game of rugby e.g. Dick Muir, John Plumtree, Gary Teichmann, John Allan etc.  He wound-up his professional coaching career with Welsh Club Newport for a season in 2001.

When The South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) was looking for a Head Coach for all of their development clinics, all the players unanimously agreed that Mac should fulfil this role.  To date 35 000 kids have come under the beady eye of Ian McIntosh over a five year period that SARLA have been in operation.
