Steel Aura
This Steel Band features 5 to 7 members, with their origins at St Dominic’s School.
Steelpans originate from Trinidad and were developed during a period when all musical instruments were banned in the country. They are made out of oil drums, cut, heated and stretched to form each type of pan, and then round bubble-shaped notes are hammered out of the drums. Once these bubbles are hit, an amazing island-style sound emerges. A set of steel pans usually comprises Bass (6 large drums which encircle the player which has the lower range of notes), Guitars (the next largest drum, an octave higher than bass), Double Seconds (an octave higher than the guitars) and Tenor (the smallest pan often used to play the main tune).
Perfect for outdoor and indoor performances, they don’t require any electrical connections to be able to be played. They are however very sensitive instruments and would require to be played in the shade, and cannot get wet.
