In 1994, John Walland landed a contract with 5FM to work alongside numerous top radio presenters. He is well remembered for the thick skin he developed, working with Darren Scott on the ‘Just Plain Darren Show’ and he also organised and presented all the sporting interviews on ‘Nashua Sports Trax’ which had a huge following. This afforded John Walland the opportunity to build up an excellent rapport with both local and international sporting personalities. John was also the sports anchor on SABC’s ‘AM Today’ breakfast show for a year.
After 14 years on air, John left 5FM to join Jo’burg’s NO1 hit music station 94.7 Highveld Stereo and until the end of 2007, he was Alex Jay’s sports anchor.
Now John Walland has re-ignited the magic with Darren Scott in “Just Plain Darren” at breakfast time every weekday morning on Jacaranda fm 94.2 and again on East Coast Radio every weekday afternoon.
John Walland regularly MC’s and/or DJ’s at corporate functions around the country and some of his MC work has included included hosting a business forum with Nelson Mandela; numerous rugby functions; SAB functions; and MC work for the likes of Vodacom; Investec; Ernst & Young; KPMG and ABSA.
He is proud to have completed 10 comrades marathons, 11 Two Oceans Ultras, 4 London marathons, 4 New York marathons, 2 x 160km Iron Man triathlons, 6 Argus Cycle Tours and two 94.7 marathons.
