Professor Morris Mthombeni

Professor Morris Mthombeni is a highly respected academic and business leader who brings together decades of executive experience and deep academic expertise. As Dean of the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) at the University of Pretoria, he plays a leading role in equipping senior executives and boards with the insight and capability to thrive in a complex and evolving business world.

A compelling and credible speaker, Professor Mthombeni delivers boardroom-relevant insights on strategic leadership, innovation, governance and sustainability – helping businesses respond to the demands of a rapidly changing world.

Before moving into academia, Professor Mthombeni built a distinguished career in the financial services sector. He held senior executive positions at Liberty Life and Momentum, and served as Chief Executive Officer of Momentum Investments and Executive Director of MMI Holdings. This extensive real-world experience informs his work with corporate audiences, enabling him to link strategic thinking with practical business challenges.

Since joining GIBS in 2014, he has taught across doctoral, MBA and executive programmes, specialising in corporate strategy, strategic leadership, innovation, corporate governance, fintech and the global business environment. He is a lead faculty member on several high-impact programmes including the GIBS Global Executive Development Programme, the Board Leadership Programme, and the Harvard Senior Executive Leadership Programme.

Professor Mthombeni holds a PhD in Corporate Governance from the University of Pretoria, an MBA in Finance from Manchester Business School, and multiple law qualifications from the University of South Africa, including an LLB, BProc and BJuris.

Beyond his academic role, he serves on numerous boards and advisory councils. He is a non-executive director at Investec Bank Limited and Stangen, and contributes to the future of business education through leadership roles with the South African Business Schools Association (as Chair), the UN Global Compact Local Network South Africa, and Business Schools for Climate Leadership Africa, where he is the founding Dean.

He also supports global initiatives on responsible management education, including as a member of the UN PRME Global Chapter Council, the Africa & Middle East Council for the Association of MBAs (AMBA) and Business Graduates Association (BGA), and the Academy of International Business Deans Roundtable.

Professor Mthombeni has delivered lectures and strategic engagements in more than a dozen countries across Africa, Europe and North America, including the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Sweden, Nigeria and the Netherlands.

Under his leadership, GIBS continues to rank among the world’s top business schools for executive education, with regular recognition in the Financial Times global rankings.
