Mushambi Mutuma

Mushambi is an author, speaker and tech leader with over 13 years of experience building brands and businesses across Africa and the US.

Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, Mushambi moved to the United States in the early 90s due to the political situation in Zimbabwe. While in the US, Mushambi’s South African-born father was one of Apple Computer’s early employees. This, along with an early encounter with Steve Jobs, cemented his love for technology and its impact (he now admits that, upon shaking Steve’s hand at the tender age of 12, he cried).

Wrapping up 17 years in the US, Mushambi graduated from Pepperdine University in Los Angeles as a Political Science and Studio Art double major. Initially his career carried him into the public health sector, leading research sites and new hospitals across Africa and Asia for the University of California for several years before coming back to his tech roots.

Since his return to South Africa, Mushambi has established himself as a sought-after tech leader and speaker. Aside from setting up multiple successful digital businesses, he’s been brought in by multiple accelerators and incubators to guide South Africa’s next generation of innovators. Multiple listed entities have also used Mushambi not only as a speaker but a consultant on digital transformation and practical innovation.

Mushambi’s first book, ‘Tech Adjacent’ was published in 2019. The book is about understanding the principles of tech, its pace, footsteps of where it’s heading, knowing how disruption and innovation work, and most importantly leveraging it for exponential success. The book shares specific insights and case studies of African businesses – both those that are being disrupted and those that are disrupting as part of a new wave of growth.

‘Tech Adjacent’ is a must-read for anyone aiming to understand where tech in Africa is heading.

As a speaker, he shares insights on Tech, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation. His speaking clientele includes SalesForce, Dell, Suits & Sneakers, QuickBooks, Standard Bank, Absa, PWC, Allan Gray, and LeaderEx to name a few. He hopes to further cultivate and advance Africa’s next generation of innovators and tech adjacent businesses through his content.

His high-impact company has grown by placing its emphasis on African engagement in the technology and digital industries, with the intention of making Africa a leading hub of innovative authority. As a digital agency & lab, its client base includes Dis-Chem, Vodacom, Granadilla, African Bank, South African Reserve Bank, SES, Sofn’Free, Telkom, Absa, and more.

As an entrepreneurial expert, he has advised multiple accelerators and incubators including the Innovation Hub, AlphaCode, Standard Bank, and Endeavor.

Mushambi’s business leadership includes the formation and board membership of multiple companies in the healthtech, fintech, edutech, and creative industries.
