David Kau

David Kau is one of the most sought-after comedians in South Africa and unquestionably this country’s most relevant, side-splitting MC.

A former recipient of the Stars of Mzansi comedy award, he has ‘shelves-full’ of awards received – some, he tells us, haven’t even been thought of yet.

David Kau’s name is synonymous with many firsts. In 1998, he stepped onto the famous Baxter Theatre Stage to participate in the Smirnoff International Comedy festival as one of 44 comedians (11 international) performing. He also graduated with a Performer’s Diploma in Speech & Drama, from the University of Cape Town and the following year, he became the first black stand-up comic at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival.

Born in Kroonstad, David began to study electrical engineering in 1995 before dropping it in 1996. He wrote and performed “The Rainbow Nation Tour”, his first one-man show in 1998, and never looked back. David was South Africa’s representative at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, Canada – year 2001. He performed in a show called Globecom, alongside comedians from New Zealand, Australia, Europe, and Canada. He was only meant to do three performances at Globecom, however he ended up performing in ‘Best of the Festival’ show, and another show showcasing the best of Black comedians at the festival – “The Best of Uptown Comics”. Today, he is seen and heard on corporate stages and in comedy clubs around the country and across the globe.
