Marks Maponyane
Marks Maponyane is one of South Africa’s best-known and most-loved former professional soccer stars and soccer analysts on both radio and television. And on corporate stages, he has both MC’d and delivered motivational talks since 1990.
Born in Meadowlands, Soweto, he played for Kaizer Chiefs Dynamos, Orlando Pirates and Wits University. Internationally he also played for Vitoria Setubal in Portugal and Grasshopper Zurich in Switzerland and for SA’s national football side, Bafana Bafana from 1992-1995.
He was named ‘South African Footballer of the Year” in 1983, 1987 and 1994 and remains Kaizer Chiefs’ all time leading goal scorer with a remarkable 85 goals to his name. He was also named ‘South African Sports Hero of the Year’ in 1984
In his 18 years as a professional soccer player, Marks made a total of 433 appearances and scored 168 goals.
Off the pitch, he worked for Premier Milling, Adidas South Africa, and Reebok for 11 years.
In 1998, Marks was elected to join the elite team of commentators at the Soccer World Cup in France and currently he is heard covering live soccer on Radio 2000 and live SABC Sport matches either at the stadiums, or in studio.
