John Walland

John’s warm and affable personality has enabled him to nurture excellent relationships with many sporting personalities both locally and internationally, over many years.

His radio career kicked-off on 5fm in 1989. Since then he has presented and or produced sport on Jo’burgs no. 1 hit music station, 94.7 Highveld Stereo; while there, he was much-loved for his self-deprecating sense of humour and banter on Whackhead Simpson’s ‘Prank Calls’. He was the morning anchor on SABC 2’s ‘AM Today’ in and also appeared on Mnet’s Super Saturday as a Sports Show participant. John’s voice is remembered from the Supersport Blitz Channel, commentating on live events broadcast across the station’s sports channels. He was also a firm favourite on Hot 1027fm and he was the anchor of the ‘KFC Sports Cage’ on Jacaranda FM. His work across his star-studded career is acknowledged by the multiple SA Radio Awards which sit proudly in his trophy cabinet.

Currently, John is heard each morning on OFM during the ‘Good Morning Breakfast Show’ between 06:00 and 09:00.

John also MC’s and makes guest appearances at various corporate and private functions where his extensive sports knowledge and affable personality endear his to diverse audiences of all ages. He is also a stadium and sports events announcer and DJ at corporate functions – including stints at the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City.

A keen sportsman, he has completed 10 Comrades Marathons, 11 Two Oceans Ultra Marathons, 8 London Marathons, 6 New York Marathons, 2 Iron Man Triathlons, 12 Argus Cycle tours and six 94.7 Cycle Challenges. He is also a brand ambassador to Scott Sports Cycling, also Garmin Navworld and currently a keen cyclist and Bounty rebound participant with Lisa Raleigh’s ‘Bounti’.

In that time, he has literally interviewed thousands of sportsmen and women, both locally and internationally as well as prominent individuals such as former President Nelson Mandela, boxing legends George Foreman and Mike Tyson, Rugby World cup winning captains Francois Pienaar and John Smit, and renowned SA cricketers like AB De Villiers, Jacques Kallis, and the late Hansie Cronje to name but a few.

As a corporate speaker, John discusses the 3 World Cup-winning captains, namely Francois Pienaar, John Smit and Siya Kolisi, and their various different management styles. In this presentation, John shares and discusses how the leadership styles and approaches three iconic Springboks can be compared to business principles and business ethics outside of the sporting arena and what makes successful teams and great leaders.
