Stellenbosch-based Dr Adriana Marais is an award-winning space scientist, futurist, innovation strategist, and corporate keynote speaker, globally recognised for her pioneering work in off-world living, extreme environment sustainability, and preparing humanity for a future beyond Earth.

A theoretical physicist with a PhD in quantum biology, Dr Marais is a Research Fellow at Stellenbosch University, where she explores the origins of life, photosynthesis, and resilience in extreme conditions. Her scientific expertise forms the foundation for her work on human adaptability, technological innovation, and planetary sustainability, all key themes for business leaders navigating the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

In 2019, she left her position as Head of Innovation at SAP Africa to launch Proudly Human, a groundbreaking initiative developing off-grid, off-world solutions for climate resilience and resource-scarce living. Its flagship Off-World Project involves field-testing habitation models in the Namib Desert, Arctic Circle, and underwater environments, simulating conditions on the Moon and Mars while delivering real-world insights for corporate innovation, team resilience, and future-focused leadership.

Adriana’s belief that “the allure of the unknown is more powerful than the comfort of the known” has taken her to Antarctica, Norway, and global desert environments, where she builds interdisciplinary teams and strategic partnerships for sustainable innovation.

She is Director at the Foundation for Space Development Africa and Chief Scientist for Africa2Moon, the continent’s first planned mission to the lunar south pole. Her international thought leadership roles include Global Chair of Science, Technology & Innovation at Tod’Aérs, Scientific Moderator on Space Resources with GESDA, and advisor on South Africa’s Presidential Fourth Industrial Revolution Task Team.

A guest lecturer at Singularity University and Duke Corporate Education, Adriana is currently completing a second PhD in blockchain economics for emerging markets. Her forthcoming book, Out of this World, and Into the Next, explores the future of interplanetary civilisation and what it means for humanity.
